Over the next 7 weeks we’re going to be looking at a little course called “Believing and Belonging” at our Sunday Night Church (part of Bearwood Chapel).
The aim of the course is to help Christians think about what it means to belong to a local church. There are too sides to this. First of all, we live in an individualistic and consumerist culture, it’s tempting to treat church as something that we just go along to in order to receive a spiritual service provided to us. If we don’t like it, we complain or move on. If other priorities get in the way then church takes a back seat. So we will be looking at why being part of a church is so important.
Secondly, we will look at what it means to be part of a healthy church. What are the marks of a healthy church. One of the reasons that some people are nervous about committing to a church is that they’ve had bad experiences of unhealthy and even abusive/controlling churches. We want to make wise choices about where we commit.
The course also sort of doubles up as a membership course for those thinking about joining with us at Bearwood Chapel. This means that there will be some material throughout explaining about why we do things they way we do. There are things which are essential to church life which should be common across all churches but there are also things that will vary from church to church. Each church will have its own particular DNA based on the particular priorities it faces in its locality (culture) and its own history (tradition).
We start this week by looking at what the essentials of a healthy church are. If you live in the area and are currently looking for a church to join then you’re welcome to come along. We will start the course at 7pm each week and you are also welcome to join us for Community Life before hand (food, prayer, conversation etc).
It may be that you are considering running some form of membership or baptism course at your own church. If so you’re welcome to have a look at our material, use it and modify it as you see fit. Just complete the form here to request a copy.
