Dave’s early church reading list

Every so often I put together a list of suggested reading around a certain theme. So, here’s  my list of good reads from the early church. This stuff is worth reading because:

1. As CS Lewis once pointed out, older books protect us from newer obsessions

2. Often this stuff is easier to read than the modern stuff including what people right about them

3. A lot of it is available free or cheaply. Check out CCEL for example.

Athanasius, Apologia Contra Arianos (A work refuting the Arian heresy and expounding the Doctrine of the Trinity)

Athanasius, On the Incarnation

Augustine, Confessions

Augustine, The City of God

Hilary of Poitiers, De Trinitate

Irenaeus, Against Heresies ( A work refuting the Gnostic Heresey)
