When it’s time to go home (Reflections on John 14)

“When everything is ready I will come and get you.” (John 14:3).

What is the secret of assurance? How can we face death without fear? I think part of it is this. When the day comes, it will not simply be that I am clutching my passport to eternity or my ticket to heaven. It’s something more wonderful than that.

When I put my trust in Jesus,  I was adopted into a family. I have a father and he welcomes me into a family home. That day will not be my choosing, the date and the destination were never my call.  It is not about me attempting to get somewhere on my terms. That takes away uncertainty.

Rather, he will call me home. I will be welcomed in by his gracious invitation.

“Till he returns or calls me home, here in the power of Christ, I’ll stand.”
