Wives and Husbands (Ephesians 5)

How do you spot a Spirit filled Christian? Maybe you look for that radiant glow. It’s like they float into the room and their face shines. Maybe, it’s all about their gifts. Can they speak in tongues, heal, prophesy?  Maybe it’s whether others recognise them and give them a title like pastor, prophet, missionary … Continue reading

Lessons for Church Life

Here at Bearwood Chapel, we’re just coming to to the end of a fantastic Bible teaching series looking at Paul’ first letter to the Corinthians. It’s great when you get to the end of a series to look back and see some of the things God has been teaching the church. Continue reading

Decision Making and Discernment (More on Servant Leadership)

How should we make decisions in church life? This is important when decision making is done by the group not by an individual. At Bearwood Chapel, we believe in plural leadership. We have a team of elders, whilst I’m paid as a full time pastor, I am not above the other elders in a kind of hierarchy but part of that team. We ask the church members to be involved in many of our decisions too. Continue reading

What Kind of Church? – A Spirit Filled Church (1 Corinthians 2)

What’s your church like? Do you ever get asked that question? Sometimes it’s by people who are thinking about faith and wondering whether or not your church is somewhere they would be comfortable and be able to find out more. Sometimes another Christian asks it and its out of genuine interest. Sometimes we get asked the question and sometimes we ask it for the wrong reason don’t we? It becomes part of the competitive spirit we’ve talked about over the past few weeks. Continue reading

The Treasure Hunt (The benefits of wisdom -Proverbs 2-3)

I once took part in a treasure hunt. It was when I was at University. Someone left me a clue in my pigeon hole (post box). I followed it to the next clue which took me along the corridor, then to the next. Eventually I got to the laundry room. There was a problem, the next clue was missing. I never found it. No-one ever owned up to setting up this trail and I never asked. I never found out where it led and what the treasure was!

Don’t worry if wisdom is treasure and we are on a treasure hunt, then God’s Word guarantees we will reach our destination and find the treasure Continue reading

Being filled with the Spirit

One of the topics we talked about with the young people at Summer Camp was “what does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit?” It was great to talk with them about this fantastic subject Sadly, the subject of “Who is the Holy Spirit” and what does it mean to be “filled with the Holy Spirit” is often controversial with a strong emphasis on the weird and the wonderful. But it does not have to be like that. Continue reading

Preaching the Trinity (3rd Sermon) Another Helper

During our Sunday meetings at Bearwood Chapel we found that over a period of time  we kept coming back to some questions that followed a theme: “What stops me?”

“What stops me from seeing God for who He is?”

“What stops me from worshipping?”

“What stops me from truly knowing God?”

“What stops me from trusting and taking God at His Word?”

“What stops me from hearing God speak?”

Well if we are going to know, worship and hear God then there’s someone really vital that we need to talk about, The Holy Spirit. Continue reading
